Weekends in the ER

Why is it that things always happen on a Friday night after all the doctor's offices are closed? Amelia started having coughing spells on Friday night at about 5pm. She was not really herself and did not want to be put down at all. At about midnight, she had a horrible coughing fit which caused me to get on the phone with the nurse hotline. She advised us to take her to the ER which was the last place I wanted to take my preemie during flu season. Josh stayed home with Will while I got in the car and headed to the ER. They did a nasal wash on her and sent it for RSV, Flu, and whooping cough which all came back negative. They basically said she has a virus and it will run it's course. By Saturday morning I made another call to the pediatrician convinced that she had reflux as she had no other symptoms of a virus. She would have the coughing fits after she ate and would cry as soon as we laid her down which are all signs of reflux. We all made our way to the pediatrician on Sunday morning and she prescribed some meds for reflux. She has slept on me or Josh for the past 3 nights only letting me put her in the bouncy seat for a couple hours last night. I'm hoping that the meds kick in or the virus runs its course soon whichever it may be because we could all use a little rest.

In the midst of all these doctor visits, we managed to fit in some Halloween fun and made some "monster cupcakes." Will has been so patient about being house bound. We hope to get him out to the Pumpkin Patch this weekend for some fun in this beautiful fall weather.

Oh no Katie! that is so hard ... poor Amelia..it totally sounds like reflux. I hope the meds work soon. Gabriel spends most of his sleeping time during the day on my parents' chest..i call it the starfish pose.
hope you and josh get some rest/sleep soon. Will is so cute with his monster cupcakes :) Take Care!!

Oh yuck Kate, BOTH of my boys had/have reflux. Gabe is still on his Prevacid twice a day. It's a very stressful thing to deal with, especially while breastfeeding. If you need to vent about it, or trade secrets and ideas, give me a call!

Katie, Sean had really bad reflux, I found a lot of comfort on the message boards at http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/ and another great site was http://www.marci-kids.com/. Hang in there!!!
